"We've been in the ambulance and medical field for the last six years," explains Becky Hendrick, who owns and operates www.PortMedRecords.com with her husband Bob. "We owned an ambulance company -- we didn't deal with 911 calls, but we dealt with nursing home patience, assisted living and the like. The crews had to make sure they had all the information that was needed, then we had to file their runs with Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance. I've been on that end of the medical field, dealing with all of that paperwork."
It was that experience that led to the formation of Safe Guard Medi-Systems Corp., and to the Medi-Chips they provide. "People have this product on a keychain," says Becky, explaining the technology. "If they're in a car accident, if they're unconscious or hurt, EMTs can take this chip and put it into a laptop or a computer at the hospital, and it will show all of the medications they're on, what they've been on, what they're allergic to, who their primary doctor is, x-rays, notifications in case of an emergency? anything and everything."
Medi-Chips come as dog tags, key chains, and other items that identify the medical chip within, providing potentially lifesaving information to EMTs and doctors in case of an emergency. The idea is grounded in Becky's real-life experiences, as well as specific needs within her own life. "I really started doing this for my mother," she explains. "She was in a nursing home with Alzheimer's, and she'd had a stroke and had to stay confined. My mother-in-law just passed away recently, and she had the beginnings of Alzheimer's, and we all knew this. We lived out in the country, and she would get lost going from here to the grocery store. She had a cell phone, but she couldn't remember how to use it to call and ask for help. If something had happened to her, this chip could have been instrumental in helping her."
